Puzzle of the Day

🍀 Tuesday, March 17 🍀

Back in the early 2000s, when some of the oldest Proofniks were busy being born, Dr. Shapiro discovered an Italian website with a bunch of MP3s of classical music (tagline: "Free and Legal!!"). Here is an excerpt from one of those MP3s. By listening, you can tell that it was digitized directly from WHAT MEDIUM?

(If you don't see an audio player in your browser, click here to open the audio file.)

For bonus impress-Dr.-Shapiro points, identify the piece of music and/or the composer.

Check back tomorrow for the answer, a shoutout to all the solvers, and a new puzzle!

Yesterday's puzzle:

Which flower has a stem that grows on the east side by day and on the west side by night?

Answer:

The sunflower. When a stalk grows more on one side than the other, it will curl toward the shorter side; that's how curly hair curls! In the case of the sunflower, growth on the western side of the stalk during the night causes the flower to nod toward the east where it meets the rising sun. Then the eastern side overtakes the western side during the day, causing the flower to "follow" the sun.

The sunflower in the picture at right was grown by Dr. Shapiro. You can tell that it's facing the sun by the light on the trees. This flower inspired a poem (caveat lector: I'm no Zachary).

Congratulations to solvers Nicholas, Spencer, Maddy, Nico, Hazel, Leo S., Charlie, Peter M., Aliana, Anna J., as well as teachers Zachary, Kathy, and Doc Durst!
