Friday's puzzle:
Webmasters of a certain era are likely to have used a piece of software called Hotmetal (usually styled as a mix of capital and lowercase letters). The name Hotmetal cleverly references two different technologies invented in 1884 and 1993, both of which are descendants of a world-changing invention from around 1440. What are these three technologies?
Answer:
Hotmetal—or HoTMetaL—was a tool for web publishing using HTML (1993). The name also referred to hot-metal typesetting (1884), the most famous incarnation of which was the Linotype machine. Finally, both of these publishing technologies are part of the lineage established by the Gutenberg printing press (c. 1440).
