Dr. Shapiro's Puzzle of the Day

Today's Puzzle

Friday, January 21
Back before we had Desmos to graph epicycles, we drew them by hand with a Spirograph.

My wife happens to own one of the earliest Spirograph toys. The image at left is from the inside of the box. Can you figure out what numbers I've covered up with red circles? Also, what do these numbers actually refer to? (Yes, the NUMBER OF THE WHEEL, but what does it physically count?)

BONUS: Guess the copyright year on this Spirograph! Closest will earn a special mention when I post the solution this evening.

Yesterday's Puzzle + Solution

  1. Driftcatcher, Close Shave, Move It Move It, Melton John, and Clearing Present Danger are names of 5 of the state of Michigan's 299 what?

Hint This is the time of year when you might see some of these 299 items around town… if you were in Michigan. You probably won't see their kind in California (at least, not in the Bay Area).
  2. Here are a few more names from that list. Fill in the blanks!
    1. Austin ____ers
    2. Fast and ______ous
    3. Shock and ____
    4. Aaron ___ Sir
    5. ____-be-____ Kenobi
    6. Ctrl-____-Delete
Solution
  1. They're snowplows. (As a student, I had a job shelving books in the university library. We named the book trucks in a similar fashion.)
    1. Austin Plowers
    2. Fast and Flurryous
    3. Shock and Thaw
    4. Aaron Brr Sir
    5. Snow-be-Gone Kenobi
    6. Ctrl-Salt-Delete

Here's the full list. Which ones are your favorites?

Congratulations to yesterday's solvers Aditi, Anna J. (and Dad), Audrey, Carleton, Inca, Jacob C., Peter V., Zachary S., and Mrs. Gregg. Thanks to everybody who made a guess!
